Max Maier

Max Maier was born on November 11, 1880, in Altdorf, a large Jewish community in the Ortenau district. He was married to Marie, née Lauer (*October 29, 1899). She was a Catholic. They named their son Karl, who later called himself Charles. Max Maier was a feed wholesaler and lived at Lehener Straße 40a (today Fedderstraße 6). In early 1938, he was forced to give up his feed business by the Nazi rulers in Freiburg. He fled to France, where he was later captured by the Gestapo during one of their brutal raids. On March 4, 1943, Max Maier was deported from Drancy concentration camp to Majdanek concentration camp with Convoy No. 50. There, he was murdered immediately upon arrival at the age of 62.
