Katharina Katzenmeier

KATHARINA KATZENMAIER (sister Theodolinde) was born on April 24, 1918 in Heppenheim an der Bergstrasse. She went to elementary school there for a year before attending the English Fräulein College in Benzheim an der Bergstrasse from Easter 1925 to Easter 1937. She then worked as a pastoral assistant.

On July 21, 1943 she was arrested in Püttlingen. She was accused of describing euthanasia in class as murder ordered by the state and expressing doubts about Hitler’s final victory. In her memoirs (source 55, p. 24) she writes that she certainly said the latter in church or private settings, but not in religious education classes because she knew how dangerous this statement was. “You are arrested for what you are,” she remembers being told to her. During the interrogation she was asked whether she doubted that Germany would win. Her answer: “Personally, yes.” When she answered „Christ“ to the question of who was higher in her opinion, Hitler or Christ, the interrogator replied: „So a Jew is higher than an Aryan.“ (ibid., p. 32ff.)

Katharina Katzenmaier was interned in prison in Saarbrücken for her “anti-state sentiments”. On October 21, 1943, they were deported from there to the Ravensbrück concentration camp. There she was given prisoner number 24295 and had to work in the armaments industry. She lived in Block VI and had to suffer all the horrors of the concentration camp there: hunger, illness, torture, cold, catastrophic sanitary conditions, lice, bedbugs, fleas and cockroaches. In Ravensbrück she also met DR. GERTRUD LUCKNER from Freiburg.

On May 2, 1945, KATHARINA KATZENMAIER had to go on the so-called death march with the other camp inmates at around 4:30 pm She survived and entered the St. Lioba monastery in Freiburg as a nun on All Saints‘ Day in 1949 .She died on August 5, 2000 at the age of 82 in a monastery in Mannheim.

In her memoirs, which were only allowed to be published after her death, she writes: “… I had incurred a fourteen-day “punishment block” because I emptied some of my soup into the bowl of a poor, sick Jewish child of eight gave him some of my bread. “You bitch,” the guard Holthöfer shouted, “you have to pay for this.” As punishment block prisoners, the women had to empty the sewers and transport the contents away in wheelbarrows. KATHARINA KATZENMAIER goes on to describe this time: “Barefoot and working non-stop until late at night with a high fever, scabies, typhus in the “shit column”, I spent these two weeks in the punishment block”.

KATHARINA KATZENMAIER, now Sister Theodolinde for a long time, describes her visit on January 2, 1990 to DR. GERTRUD LUCKNER in the St.Vinzenz retirement home in a particularly moving way.
