HANS WINTERHALTER was born in Hinterzarten on July 16, 1907. He was Roman Catholic like his father Adolf Winterhalter, who also came from Hinterzarten. On August 10, 1937, he was transferred to the Walchum camp. After his release, he lived in Freiburg at Fürstenbergstrasse 7 and worked as a medical assistant. In 1939, HANS WINTERHALTER was again tried „for sexual immorality between men“, this time in Freiburg. On November 30, 1939, he was sentenced by the Freiburg Regional Court to two years in prison and three years of loss of honor. From the Freiburg prison, HANS WINTERHALTER was first sent to Bruchsal penitentiary and then to Börgermoor concentration camp on January 31, 1940. On February 18, 1941, he was transported to the main hospital in Papenburg and returned to Börgermoor concentration camp on March 21, 1941. He was taken to Delmenhorst prison camp on March 27, 1941 and to Flossenbürg concentration camp on November 10, 1941. There he was placed in the detention category “§ VH” (= § 175 preventive detainee). On October 24, 1942, HANS WINTERHALTER was deported to Sachsenhausen concentration camp. He “died” there on December 2, 1942 at 8:15 p.m. He was 35 years old. The death certificate states, as with all deaths in concentration camps, natural causes. It is known, however, that most of the homosexuals who died in Sachsenhausen were murdered.
